Easier EV Charging Touted

An Israeli company has developed a wireless electric-vehicle charger that allows EV drivers to park on top of the unit and get automatic power input.

Electreon Wireless debuted the Lite DOT product at the IAA Transportation event this week in Hanover, Germany.

It said the above-ground charging pad can be used for both passenger and light commercial EVs, and stationed indoors or outdoors, making the charging process automatic and “as simple as parking.”

“The future of electric mobility is wireless, and it will soon be available in every parking space,” said Electreon Chairman and CEO Oren Ezer. “With Lite DOT, we are introducing a new category to the market: powerful, modular charging that can be installed without any modifications to existing infrastructure.”

Charging access, especially on the road, has been a major deterrent to EV adoption in the U.S. Consumers say they want reliable, convenient charging points.

Lite DOT is designed to automatically identify an EV and start charging it at up to 11 kilowatts of power, the company said. It can be installed within a parking space with no “need for extensive excavation work,” or as a wall unit option for garages or outdoor poles.

Electreon cited data reported by the International Energy Agency that global EV demand will require about 150 million more charging points by the end of this decade.

The charger maker, which has also developed a wireless “charging highway,” predicts wireless chargers will ultimately become standard.

“The strong interest from international automakers and leading suppliers demonstrates that the industry is ready for the next stage of development,” the company said.
